For corporate sustainability leaders, Scope 3 emissions reporting is one of the most complex — and scrutinized — aspects of environmental disclosure. Accounting for supply chain emissions requires transparent methodologies, defensible data, and alignment with evolving standards. Errors or gaps can undermine credibility with regulators, investors, and other stakeholders.

To help organizations strengthen their reporting, CIBO Technologies recently hosted a webinar led by CIBO Sustainability Expert Grant Ivison Lane, who shared strategies to build accurate, defensible Scope 3 inventories backed by trusted data.

Meet the Expert: Grant Ivison Lane

Grant brings deep expertise in greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and protocol design. Before joining CIBO, he served as Protocol and Standards Director at the Ecosystem Services Market Consortium (ESMC), where he drove the development of the Scope 3 GHG market-based intervention accounting protocol.

With more than seven years of experience, Grant has:

  • Built GHG inventories for major agricultural companies

  • Designed and advanced standards for Scope 3 credit generation

  • Guided CDP reporting aligned with the GHG Protocol Corporate and Scope 3 Standards

  • Developed some of the first agricultural GHG inventories in California’s San Joaquin Valley

  • Applied ecosystem services frameworks to inform multi-stakeholder decision-making

This background gives him a unique perspective on what makes Scope 3 reporting both reliable and defensible.

Key Themes from the Webinar

In his presentation, Grant outlined practical insights for organizations working to improve their reporting processes:

  1. Clarity in a Complex Landscape
The Scope 3 reporting ecosystem continues to evolve. Grant explained how companies can stay aligned with frameworks like the GHG Protocol and CDP while preparing for new requirements on the horizon.

  2. Defensible Accounting
Accurate Scope 3 inventories depend on robust methodologies. Grant discussed how organizations can move beyond estimates to establish transparent, audit-ready reporting systems.

  3. Data You Can Stand Behind
Without reliable data, Scope 3 disclosures risk being challenged. Grant highlighted how CIBO’s technology provides scientifically rigorous, scalable data — ensuring that corporate reporting can stand up to regulatory and stakeholder scrutiny.

Why This Matters for Corporate Sustainability Leaders

For many organizations, Scope 3 accounts for the majority of reported emissions. Yet inaccurate or non-defensible reporting exposes companies to reputational, financial, and compliance risks. Grant’s insights demonstrate how companies can build trustworthy inventories that not only meet today’s requirements but withstand tomorrow’s reviews.
